Indoor cats and small dogs in flats often have very little reason to move during the day. A bowl of food removes the last one: eating takes thirty seconds and the rest of the day is available for sleeping. Weight gain and boredom related behaviour both follow from that easily.
Putting the same meal inside something that has to be pushed around inverts it. Every piece costs a few steps, and over a full meal that adds up to a genuine amount of activity, along with the mental work of solving why food comes out sometimes and not others.
A transparent body means the animal can see there is food inside, which is what motivates the first attempt. An opaque ball has to be learned from the outside in, and plenty of cats will not invest that effort in an object that gives no sign of containing anything.
It also tells you how it is going. A ball still half full an hour later means the dispensing hole is too tight for your kibble or the animal has given up, and either is worth knowing. An empty ball in ten minutes means it is set too easy to be doing much.
Hard plastic loaded with kibble on a laminate floor is loud, and a cat that decides to use it at four in the morning will be heard throughout the house. On a rug it is far quieter and works just as well, so putting it down on carpet is worth doing from the start.
Kibble size is the specification that decides whether it works at all. Pieces up to about eight millimetres pass freely; anything larger jams and the animal gets nothing however hard it works. Check your food against that before assuming a dispenser will suit, since a jammed ball teaches the animal to ignore it.

It unscrews into two halves, which is what makes it cleanable. Rinse both parts weekly, since kibble dust and oils build up on the inside surface and eventually go stale, and a ball that smells rancid is one the animal will stop using without you understanding why.
Dry it fully before refilling. Any moisture inside makes kibble swell and stick to the walls, which blocks the dispensing hole and turns a working toy into a sealed container. Wipe rather than soaking, and never put wet food in it.
