The obvious reading of a dog jumpsuit is warmth, and that is the one thing this is not for. Thin polyester adds very little insulation. What full coverage does is put a layer between the dog and everything else, and that turns out to be useful in several situations that have nothing to do with temperature.
Shedding is the common one. A dog in mid moult deposits coat on every surface it touches, and a suit catches most of it, so the fur ends up in the washing machine rather than on the sofa. It also stops a dog reaching an itchy patch, which is a gentler alternative to a cone for skin conditions on the body.
Grass seeds are a genuine summer hazard. The barbed heads work in one direction only, so a seed that reaches the coat migrates inwards and can penetrate skin, ending up between toes, in ears or under the surface where it needs removing surgically. Long coated dogs walked through meadows in July are the usual patients.
Full coverage means fewer seeds reach the coat at all, and the ones that land on fabric come off when it does. It is not complete protection since the feet, head and ears are still exposed, but it removes the belly and flanks from the equation, and those are where most of them collect.
Ribbed cuffs at the legs stop the suit riding up, which is the failure mode that makes a four leg garment useless within an hour. Check the back length and chest against the published chart rather than guessing, and size to the chest if the two disagree, since a suit tight across the ribs restricts breathing during exercise.
For all day wear, check underneath every couple of days. Fabric moving against a coat can cause matting in long coated dogs, particularly in the armpits and behind the ears, and any garment worn continuously can rub. Take it off overnight so the coat can breathe and the skin can dry.
