A blanket goes in the machine. A sofa does not. Putting the same throw down every time also gives them a spot that smells of them, which is half of why they settle on it.

A single blanket means the sofa is unprotected every time it goes in the wash, which in a shedding household is weekly. Two or three of the same size means one is always in use, and because fleece dries quickly the rotation works even without a tumble dryer.
That is really the argument for a cheap washable layer over an expensive bed cover. It takes the mud, hair and the occasional accident, it washes at a temperature that actually kills what needs killing, and if one is ruined it is replaced without much thought.
A blanket that has been slept on carries the animal's own scent, and that turns out to be useful well beyond the sofa. Taking it to the vet, putting it in a carrier, or laying it on a strange bed in a holiday cottage gives an anxious animal something familiar in an unfamiliar place.
It works the same way in reverse for a new bed or a new carrier. Putting a slept on blanket inside makes the new object smell like somewhere the animal already sleeps, which shortens the fortnight of suspicion most cats apply to new furniture.
Wash at sixty degrees where the fabric allows it, since that is the temperature that deals with dust mites and bedding odour properly. Skip the fabric softener: it coats fleece fibres and leaves them matted, which is what makes a blanket feel stiff and slick after a few months rather than soft.
Coral fleece pills with use, particularly where an animal turns before lying down. It is cosmetic rather than a fault, and a fabric shaver takes it off in a few minutes if it bothers you. Air drying is kinder than a tumble dryer, and fleece dries fast enough that it rarely matters.
One practical note on hair: shake the blanket out thoroughly before it goes anywhere near the machine. Fleece holds shed coat tightly, and a blanket loaded with it will leave hair on everything else in that wash and gradually clog the filter. A minute outside the back door saves a good deal of irritation later.

For a bed liner, measure the bed rather than the animal. For furniture, measure the area you actually want covered, and allow extra to tuck in so the blanket stays put.
Loved by real pet parents
We gave up on keeping the lurcher off the two seater and bought the 160 by 200 instead, which covers the seat and both arms with enough left to tuck down the back. It goes in the machine on a Sunday and the sofa underneath has stayed clean since. The coral fleece is soft on both faces so he does not care which way up it lands.
Ordered the grey paw expecting something darker and what came is closer to a pale silver, which shows every bit of black fur. No complaints about the fleece itself, it has been through the wash four times and has not gone bobbly. I would pick the coffee one if I were ordering again.

We use it as the blanket that lines the carrier for trips, and she is noticeably calmer on it than on bare plastic. It weighs almost nothing folded so it lives in the bottom of the bag. The 52 by 76 is exactly right for a carrier floor.
It is soft and the dog likes it, so no real complaints there. The first two washes left coral fleece fluff all round the drum and over everything else in the load, so I now do it on its own. It has settled down since, but it was a nuisance for a fortnight.
Measured the armchair before ordering and the L size covers the seat and the front edge where he puts his paws. The fleece is warmer than the cotton throw we had over it before and he settles much faster on it. Shakes clean of hair outside before it goes near the machine.
Bought two of the 76 by 104 in different colours so there would be no arguing, and of course they both want the camel paw one. They knead it half to death and the fleece has not pulled or laddered. Washes at thirty and comes out looking the same.
The 100 by 160 sounded generous until two collies got on it and one is always half off the edge. My own fault for not going to the biggest size. The fleece is thick and has survived a lot of muddy paws and a lot of washes.
The reason I keep buying these is that they are back on the floor the next day rather than sitting damp in a pile. Ours is the 76 by 104 and it is dry on the airer overnight with no radiator on. Soft on both sides, which the cat seems to mind about more than the dog does.
