The details
The dispenser itself needs almost nothing, but the exit slot collects grit and the odd torn scrap of bag, and a blocked slot means fighting to get the next bag out one handed while holding a lead. Clear it when you change the roll and it never becomes a problem.
Wipe the outside occasionally with warm soapy water, particularly if it has been dropped in mud. Check the clip at the same time, since that is the part that fails and the failure is silent: you do not notice a dispenser has gone until the walk where you need it.
