Pointed Witch Hat

Twenty seconds of hat, and that is the point.

A rigid hat is the hardest thing on this site to keep on an animal, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Bought as a prop for the length of a photograph, it is excellent.

Why you'll love it

Made for happy, healthy pets

It photographs, then it comes off

A rigid pointed hat is the most costume like thing in the range and the least comfortable to keep on. Bought knowing that, it does its job in the twenty seconds a photograph takes and everybody is happy.

Four genuinely different designs

The appliqués are distinct rather than recoloured: a large pumpkin with a leaf, a pumpkin with bat wings, a small pumpkin and a plain bat. The bat is the one that reads at a distance.

Small enough for a cat

At 16.5cm across the brim it is scaled for a cat or a small dog head rather than being a human hat sold optimistically. On a large dog it looks comically undersized, which some people want.

Good fit if

  • A single photograph rather than an evening
  • Cats and small dogs, given the 16.5cm brim
  • Someone holding the animal while someone else shoots
  • Anyone who finds an undersized hat on a big dog funny

Look elsewhere if

  • Your pet dislikes being touched around the head
  • You want something that stays put unattended
  • The animal has a history of eating fabric

Why a hat is harder than a coat

Everything else here rests on the body, where an animal has comparatively little sensitivity and no urgent reason to react. A hat sits on the skull, next to the ears and inside the field of view, and the reflex to shake it off is close to automatic. That reflex is not stubbornness and it does not train away in an evening.

So the realistic expectation is seconds, not minutes. Have the camera ready first, put the hat on last, and take it off as soon as the shot is taken. Done in that order this is a good purchase. Done the other way round it is a small argument you will lose.

The elastic is the part to watch

A pointed hat cannot balance by itself, so it is held by a thin elastic that passes under the jaw. Thin elastic concentrates pressure into a narrow line, which is exactly the geometry that becomes uncomfortable fastest. Set it so two fingers slide underneath easily, and if the hat will only stay upright when the elastic is tighter than that, let it sit at an angle instead.

Never leave it on unattended. An animal working at an elastic with a back paw can get the paw caught in the loop, which turns an irritating hat into a genuine tangle at the throat.

Four designs and what they do at distance

The large pumpkin with a green leaf is the loudest and the one to choose if the hat has to carry the whole costume. The small pumpkin is subtler and suits a cat, where a large appliqué swamps the head. The bat is plain orange on black and reads best from furthest away because it is a single shape rather than a face.

The bat winged pumpkin has the most detail and the least carrying power. It is the one to pick when the photograph is a close up of the head rather than a whole animal in a room.

Twenty seconds was all we needed

I bought it knowing a rigid pointed hat is not something a cat wears all evening, and that is precisely how it went. Elastic behind the ears, three photographs, hat off, everybody content. The brim at 16.5cm is scaled for a cat head rather than looking like a human hat perched on her.

The appliqué edge lifted

It looks the part and the shape is good for the size. The pumpkin is glued on and one corner started lifting after the third outing, so I pressed it back down and it is holding for now. It is a prop rather than something built to last, which at this size I think is fair enough.

Labrador

Deliberately too small on a big dog

I ordered it knowing full well it would look ridiculous on a labrador, and that was entirely the point. Perched on his head, a 13.5cm hat gets a laugh every time. The felt is stiff enough that it keeps its point even after he shakes it off.

Isaac D.· United Kingdom· 30 May 2026

Elastic is thinner than I expected

The felt is properly structured and the point stands up without any help, which is more than the soft ones manage. The elastic is very fine though, and I could see it snapping if you stretched it hard over a big head. Fine on our cat, and the bat appliqué reads well from across the room.

Two indoor cats

Four designs and they differ

I could not tell from the thumbnails whether the four were just recolours, and they are not. We have the large pumpkin with the leaf and the one with bat wings, and they look properly different side by side. Both hold the pointed shape well.

Staffie and a terrier

Slides on a flat headed dog

On a broad flat head it tips sideways within a minute no matter where I set the elastic. Our smaller dog wears it perfectly well, so it is a head shape thing rather than a fault. Nicely made, and the felt is thicker than I expected for thirty odd grams.

The bat design is the best one

I ordered the plain bat rather than any of the pumpkins because I wanted something that shows at a distance, and that was the right call. At 13.5cm tall it is a proper pointed hat rather than a flat disc. Our cat tolerated it for about a minute, which was plenty.

Elastic sits well behind the ears

I expected a fight and got about thirty seconds of mild suspicion. The thin elastic tucks behind her ears rather than pressing under her jaw, which I think is why she left it alone. The small pumpkin design is quite subtle and I like that about it.

No wash means plan ahead

It is spot clean only and I can see why, since a wash would flatten the whole structure. Ours picked up a smear of something on the brim and it took careful dabbing to shift. The hat itself is neat and it weighs about as much as a couple of coins.

Good questions

Before you buy

A thin elastic under the chin, which is the only way a pointed hat stays upright. Slide two fingers under it before you let go, and take the hat off the moment the photograph is done.

Glued, not stitched. It is secure on arrival but a glued edge is exactly the kind of thing an animal picks at, so this is a supervised item and not one to leave on.

It will perch rather than fit. The brim is 16.5cm, scaled for a cat or a small dog. On a labrador it sits on top of the head looking deliberately too small.

There is one size. On a cat or a chihuahua it sits properly; on a spaniel it perches; on anything larger it looks deliberately comic. All three are valid, but only the first is the hat behaving as designed.

No. The brim is stiffened and the appliqué is glued, so water will soften one and lift the other. Sponge any marks and store it flat with nothing on top.
