The legs project sideways from a panel that sits across the shoulders. Nothing wraps a limb and nothing crosses the belly, so an animal can walk, sit and lie down normally while looking like it has doubled in width.
Each leg has a wire core, so they stay where you bend them instead of drooping after the first shake. That is the difference between a spider silhouette and eight bits of fabric hanging down.
Every combination costs the same. Choosing the large in black and red does not cost more than the small in black, which is unusual in seasonal costume ranges.

The whole costume is a cotton panel across the shoulders with eight plush legs sewn out from it. Nothing covers the torso, nothing passes under the belly and no limb goes through anything. What the animal actually wears is closer to a harness than a garment, and the spider effect comes from the volume projecting sideways into the air.
That is a much easier ask than a sleeved outfit. An animal in a full suit spends the evening aware of fabric against its skin; an animal in this notices a band across the shoulders for about a minute and then gets on with things, right up until it tries to walk through somewhere narrow.
Each leg has a wire running down it. Bend one and it stays bent, which means the silhouette holds through an evening instead of collapsing into eight limp strips after the first shake. It also means you can shape them: swept back and slightly up is far more practical indoors than straight out sideways.
The wire is also the reason this cannot go in a washing machine. A cycle will kink the cores permanently and mat the plush, and neither comes back. Sponge the panel, let it dry flat, and store it without anything heavy on top.
Black, red, and a black and red mix, and unusually every combination costs the same. There is no premium for the large or for the two tone version, so the choice is purely about how it will photograph.
Black disappears on a black cat and looks superb on a tabby or a cream coated dog. Red is the opposite and is the one to pick for a dark animal. The mixed version carries the most detail close up and flattens into dark grey at any distance, so it suits a portrait rather than a room shot.

The supplier publishes no measurements for this one, only shipping weights, so there is no chart to reproduce and inventing one would be worse than saying so. Judge by the animal instead: the panel spans the shoulders, so small suits a cat or a toy breed, medium a terrier, and large anything up to roughly spaniel width. If your animal wears a harness, the size that fits that will fit this.

The eight legs stick out sideways from the shoulder panel and in a group photograph he takes up twice the space he should. He can still sit and lie down because nothing crosses his belly. I bent the legs upwards slightly and they stayed exactly where I put them.
I sized up thinking the panel would be small, and the large swamps our terrier so the legs hang lower than they should. The medium would have been right. Construction is good though and the wired legs are the best part of it.
I expected him to freeze the way he does in a full suit, but because his own legs are free he just carried on. The neck band and the body strap both adjust, so it sits without pressing anywhere. Eight plush legs bobbing along the hallway is a very good sight.
The wire cores do hold a pose, but after a night in the drawer the legs come out flattened and need bending back into shape. It takes a minute and then they look right again. The black and red version is more striking than the plain black in a dim room.
This came out again this autumn after a year folded away and the legs bent straight back into shape. The cotton panel has not gone bobbly where the strap sits across the shoulders. It goes on in about ten seconds because it is only two fastenings.
The costume is well made and the plush legs are dense rather than floppy. On our cat the shoulder panel sits a little wide and the strap behind the front legs needed pulling tight to stop the whole thing sliding round. She wore it long enough for photographs and then wriggled out.
We had a printed spider outfit before and it read as a black blob from more than a metre away. These legs actually project sideways, so the shape is obvious across a room. Ours is the black and red and the red joints catch the light nicely.
A few plush fibres came off on my jumper the first time I handled it, though that stopped after the first outing. The legs themselves are firm and hold whatever curve you give them. Our whippet cross wore it for a whole evening without pawing at it.
We went for the red because our garden is dark and black on a black cat would have vanished completely. The legs held their curve through an hour of people coming to the door. Nothing goes under the belly, so she could still jump onto the gate post in it.

Spot clean only. The legs are wire cored, and a wash cycle will kink the wire and flatten the plush. Sponge the panel and let it dry away from a radiator.
They add roughly a body width on each side, so yes, in a narrow hallway. Bend them upward rather than straight out if your house has tight corners and your animal is going to move around in it.
Black on a light coated animal, red on a dark one. The black and red version has the most detail up close but reads as dark grey from across a room.
They should not. They project outward from shoulder height rather than hanging down, so they sit clear of the floor on a standing animal. On a very low slung dog the rear pair can brush the ground, and bending them upward fixes it.
The red eyes on the black version are the only separate components. They are stitched rather than glued, but check them before each wearing and stop using it if either works loose.
