Plush Pumpkin Hood Pet Costume

A hood, not a hat. Read that again.

The listing calls this a hat. The photographs show a hood: it goes right around the skull with an oval opening for the face, and both ears end up inside it.

Why you'll love it

Made for happy, healthy pets

The most photogenic thing here

A full pumpkin head fills a photograph in a way no hat can, because the whole face is framed by the costume rather than sitting beneath it. If you want one striking picture, this is the item that delivers it.

Padded rather than rigid

The plush is soft and filled, so there is no stiff brim pressing anywhere and nothing to poke an eye. It compresses rather than resisting when an animal shakes.

Two sizes, honestly labelled

Thirty seven and forty two centimetres overall, which is a small dog or cat and a medium dog respectively. That is a real distinction rather than one size optimism.

Good fit if

  • One striking photograph rather than an evening
  • Animals already relaxed about being handled around the head
  • Someone who can take it off the moment the shot is done
  • Cats and small dogs in the small, medium dogs in the large

Look elsewhere if

  • Your pet is nervous or noise sensitive
  • Nobody will be holding or watching them
  • The animal relies on hearing more than most, as older ones do

A hood is not a hat

A hat perches on top of the skull and leaves the ears outside it. This wraps the head entirely, with a padded rim framing the face and the ears folded inside the plush. Those are different products with different consequences, and only one of them is what the listing name suggests.

The consequence that matters is hearing. An animal locates a sound by turning its ears independently and comparing what each one receives. Inside a padded hood neither ear can move and both receive a muffled version of the room, so the animal loses the direction of a noise as well as some of its volume.

What it gives you in exchange

A photograph nothing else here can produce. The face sits framed inside a pumpkin, so the animal's own expression becomes part of the costume rather than something underneath it. Every other item in this range decorates the body and leaves the head to speak for itself; this one does the opposite.

The padding helps. There is no stiff brim and nothing rigid near the eyes, so what rests against the head is soft and compresses when the animal shakes. Compared with a structured pointed hat it is far gentler, even though it covers considerably more.

Two sizes, and getting it wrong

Thirty seven centimetres overall for the small, forty two for the large. The small is a cat or a chihuahua; the large is a terrier or a spaniel. There is no third option, so an animal between the two is better in the smaller one worn slightly high than the larger one slipping.

A hood that is too big is the specific failure to avoid. It rotates as the animal moves and the face opening ends up over one eye, which is when a mildly odd experience becomes a frightening one. Check it is centred every time before you let go.

Overall length rather than head circumference, because that is the single figure the supplier publishes. It is measured flat from the crown to the edge of the neck opening. CJ prices the large slightly below the small, which looks like an error on their side; both are listed here at one price.

Two indoor cats

Soft enough to squash flat

The plush compresses when she shakes instead of fighting her, which is why it stayed on longer than the rigid hat we tried before. The ribbed surround round the face opening keeps the shape without pressing anywhere. The small at 37cm is right for a cat.

It fills the whole photograph

The face opening frames her head completely, so the pumpkin is the picture rather than a hat sitting on top of one. The stitched face lines up well and the little green stalk stands up properly on the crown. She wore it for two minutes and I got four good photographs out of it.

Cannot wash the padding

It picked up a wet nose mark inside the face opening and a damp cloth is as far as I dare go, because padded plush does not dry properly. Worth knowing before a muddy evening out. Otherwise it is well made and the stitched face has not pulled at all.

Large fitted a medium dog

Forty two centimetres overall sounded vague until it arrived, and on a cocker it sits properly with the opening round his muzzle. Two sizes is more honest than the one size hoods I looked at. He shook it once, it stayed put, and then he got on with his evening.

Covers the ears, as it says

The description is clear that it goes over both ears, and I still underestimated how much our dog would object at first. With a treat in hand he settled after a minute or so. It is soft and padded rather than stiff, so nothing digs in while it is on.

Best picture of the year

The whole head being framed by the pumpkin makes it look like a proper costume rather than an accessory. The felt stalk on the crown has stayed upright through a fortnight folded in a drawer. Padded all through, so there is nothing hard anywhere near his eyes.

Straps are short under the jaw

The hood itself is lovely and the stitched face is neat rather than printed. The side straps only just meet under our dog's jaw with no spare length, so on anything with a broader head the large would be essential. Ours wore it, but I was not comfortable leaving it on him.

No stiff brim to poke anyone

We gave up on a rigid hat last year because the brim kept catching her ear. This is padded the whole way round and there is nothing firm in it at all, so when she rubs it against the sofa it simply gives. The oval opening has kept its shape too.

Orange is slightly muted

The plush is a softer, duller orange than the photographs suggest, more autumnal than bright. It still reads as a pumpkin instantly so it is not a problem, just not quite what I pictured. The side straps are easy to fasten and the padding has not flattened.

Good questions

Before you buy

It muffles it. The hood encircles the head and both ears sit inside it, so sound arrives dulled and an animal cannot turn an ear towards it. That is the main reason this is a short wear item rather than an evening one.

Forwards, yes; the opening is generous. Peripheral vision is reduced because the padded rim sits in the outer field of view, which is why an animal in this often turns its whole head to look at something.

Small. The large is scaled for a medium dog and will slip down over a cat's eyes, which is exactly the failure you do not want.

Minutes, and only with you watching. It is the most enclosing thing in this range, so treat it the way you would treat a hat: on for the photograph, off immediately after.

The green felt stalk is stitched into the crown seam rather than glued on, so it is more secure than the appliqué on the witch hat. It is still worth a tug before each wearing.
