A cat asleep in the open keeps some part of itself alert to that, which is why the expensive open cushion gets ignored and the cardboard box the cushion arrived in becomes the favourite. Three walls and a roof remove the problem, and the animal drops into deeper sleep because nothing can arrive from above or behind.
That is the whole design argument here, and it has nothing to do with the season. The pumpkin shape is a coincidence of geometry. A sphere with a hole cut in it happens to be both a good cave and an obvious pumpkin. The sherpa trim around the mouth is the other detail worth noticing: it marks the entrance by texture, which matters to an animal going in head first in the dark.
There is no wire hoop or moulded shell in this. The arch holds itself up but yields under a paw, so a cat that wants to flatten one wall and sleep half in and half out can do exactly that. Some cats want the rigid kind that holds a perfect dome; most do not care, and a fair number prefer being able to collapse a side.
What the softness buys you is storage. The whole thing compresses into a bag and springs back, which is the difference between keeping a seasonal object and giving it away in November. A rigid 40cm dome has to live somewhere for eleven months. This does not.
The small is 32cm across and 25cm tall, the large 40cm by 30cm. Measure your cat curled rather than stretched, because a cat that sleeps in a tight circle needs far less floor than its length suggests. Most adult cats suit the large; the small is a kitten bed, or a bed for a genuinely small adult that likes to be wedged in tightly.
The supplier's listing mentions chihuahuas, poodles and pomeranians. We have left that off the page. A 25cm opening and a 32cm floor is a cat space, and a small dog that likes to burrow might use the large, but selling this as a dog bed would be optimistic in a way that ends with a return. It is a cat bed.

Measure the cat curled up, not stretched out. If you are between the two, take the large, since a cat will happily underfill a cave and will not use one it has to squeeze into.
Sponge clean only. Vacuum the plush with a soft brush head rather than picking fur off by hand, and flip the base occasionally so it wears evenly. Stored compressed it will come out creased; stand it up for a day and the arch recovers on its own.

We have bought her three open cushions over the years and she ignored all of them in favour of the airing cupboard. A roof and three walls changed that immediately and she has slept in the large one every night since it came out of the bag. The pumpkin part is for us. The cave part is for her.
The outside is forty centimetres across, but once you allow for how thick the plush walls are the usable space inside is a good deal less. Our big ginger tom can get in but he cannot turn round comfortably. For a smaller cat it would be ideal, and the sherpa around the mouth is genuinely soft.
The thing that decided it for me was that it packs down. It went into a storage bag in November as flat as a cushion and came back out this autumn with the shape completely recovered. Nothing else in the house that is 40cm across stores like that. She was back in it the same afternoon.
Lovely bed and the sherpa trim around the opening is the bit our cat kneads at, so it gets plenty of use. It cannot go in the machine though, so a hairball meant half an hour with a sponge and a lot of patience. Worth knowing before you put it somewhere she is likely to be sick.
Went for the 32cm rather than the 40cm because she is still small, and the opening is the right height for her to step into rather than climb. She has taken it over completely and drags her toys inside. Only a hundred and fifty grams, so I can pick the whole thing up with her still in it.

The plush is thick and the base is properly padded, so for sleeping it is excellent. Because it is soft sided rather than structured, when she leans on the opening the whole roof dips down over her. She does not seem to mind, but if you want something that holds its shape rigidly this is not it.
Some caves are just a shell with a thin fabric floor and you end up folding a blanket into the bottom. This one has a padded base already, so it went straight down and she settled on it. The opening is 25cm at its tallest, which is plenty for her to walk in without ducking.
Started with the small for the kitten, then the older cat decided she wanted one too, so we have the 40cm as well. They sit side by side under the window. The sherpa trim is the bit they both go for, and neither has scratched at the plush.

The supplier lists chihuahuas and pomeranians, but at a 32cm footprint with a 25cm opening this is really a cat bed. A very small dog that likes to burrow will use the large; anything with legs will find it cramped. We would sell you a cat bed honestly rather than a dog bed optimistically.

Probably not, and we would rather say so. A cat that has never chosen an enclosed space is unlikely to start because the enclosure is orange. Try it somewhere the cat already sleeps rather than somewhere you would like it to, and give it a fortnight before deciding.
