Why you'll love it
It goes over the head and settles. There is no buckle to set, no stud to line up and no strap to tighten, which means there is also nothing to get wrong and nothing pressing anywhere.
Every other garment in this range fits by chest or back length. This one fits by the head opening, because that is the only part it has to pass over. If the head goes through comfortably, the rest is loose by design.
Fifteen supplier frames, of which five are clean studio and lifestyle photographs. We dropped two that appear to be computer generated rather than photographed, and say so rather than passing them off.

Take a soft tape around the widest part of the skull, which is usually just behind the ears and across the cheekbones, and read the number. Add roughly two centimetres and pick the size that clears it. Eighteen, twenty and 21 centimetres are the three openings, and there is nothing above that.
The rest of the garment is deliberately loose, so once the head is through nothing else needs checking. That is the advantage of a pullover: there is no fastening to set wrong, and no strap that can be left a notch too tight by mistake.
Anything passing over the head has to clear the ears, and ears fold backwards easily but object to being folded forwards. Going on, the opening should travel from the nose toward the tail so the ears flatten the way they naturally do. Coming off, reverse it.
Get that direction wrong and even a generous opening feels like a snag. It is the single most common reason a pullover costume is refused the second time, and it has nothing to do with the size being wrong.
Worn back on the shoulders the habit still reads clearly, because the white front panel and the black cape are doing most of the work in a photograph. Up, it frames the face and covers the ears; down, it covers nothing at all.
Start with it down. If the animal is unbothered after a minute, try it up for the photograph and take it straight back down again. That order gives you both versions and risks nothing.

Head opening is the figure that decides whether it fits; the two cape dimensions only describe how much fabric hangs behind. The steps between sizes are small, one to two centimetres at the head, so measure rather than estimating from breed. The supplier states plainly that the range suits small and medium breeds and not large ones.
Loved by real pet parents
This is the only costume I have bought where the instruction is to measure round the skull, and once I stopped trying to work it out from her chest it was straightforward. The medium at 20cm went over easily and the cape settles across her shoulders on its own. Nothing to buckle means nothing pressing anywhere.
It weighs fifty grams in any size and there is not a single stud or strap on it, which after a few years of wrestling with buckles is a genuine relief. It goes over his head, settles, and that is the whole process. He wore it at the front door all evening and it never needed adjusting once.
On the sofa and at the front door it looks great and the black and white is properly crisp. Once he breaks into a run the cape flips up over his back and stays there until he stops. At 37cm it is long enough that I expected it to sit better, but it is a very light fabric so perhaps that is inevitable.
Most of the costumes we have say hand wash only, so being able to put this through a cool machine cycle and hang it up is the reason it gets worn more than the others. Two washes in and the white is still white. The head opening has not stretched either.
Our collie measures a whisker under 21cm round the head and the large went on but needed a firm pull past the ears, which he was not keen on. Once it is on he is perfectly happy and the cape is a good length on him. I would have liked a size above the large for dogs that fall between.
Having the hood and the cape as one piece removes the thing that always went wrong before, which was a cape sliding round until it was underneath the dog. Here the hood holds it in place and it stays where it should. Very simple and it took about three seconds to put on.
It does exactly what it says it does, which is go over the head and hang. On our slim dog that means it hangs quite a lot, and there is no way to take any of it in because there is nothing to adjust. It reads well in a photograph from the front and rather baggy from the side. Perfectly fine for one evening.
The small head opening is 18cm and that turned out to be right for our cat with nothing to spare. She took it off herself after about ten minutes by backing out of it, which I would far rather she could do than have her stuck in something with straps. We got the photographs we wanted first.
Three of the things in our Halloween box need two people to put on. This one does not. Over the head and done, with nothing to line up or tighten. The cape is 32cm on the small, which covers about half her back, and that looks right rather than swamping her.
