On most pet costumes the hat arrives as its own item on a length of elastic, which means a second fitting operation, a second thing pressing on the animal, and a second thing to lose. Here the three point hat is sewn to the hood, so it goes on with the coat and comes off with it.
That also solves the usual problem of a hat that will not stay upright. It is supported by the hood rather than balanced on the skull, so it stands up because the garment holds it there and not because an elastic is pulling it down.
It closes with press studs down the chest. Studs open along their whole length in one movement, which matters when an animal has decided it has finished, and they cannot catch fur. A zip on a costume that fastens across the thickest part of the coat is a trap, and this design avoids it.
Fasten from the throat downward and stop at whichever stud leaves the coat sitting close without gripping. There is no requirement to close every one, and on a deep chested dog leaving the lowest open is usually more comfortable.
The coat covers the chest, the shoulders and the front legs, and stops. Nothing goes over the hips, nothing passes under the belly and the back legs are completely free. That is what makes an outfit with this much fabric on it still workable for an evening rather than a photograph.
It also means the animal can squat and toilet without the costume being in the way, which is the practical difference between something you can leave on for an hour and something you cannot.
It closes around the ribcage with studs, so the chest figure is a hard limit: too small and the studs simply will not meet. The length figure only tells you how far down the back the scalloped hem reaches, and being short there costs you nothing but coverage.
The steps between sizes are five to six centimetres of chest, which is generous, so a dog between two sizes has real room to go up without the coat swimming.

Chest is the binding figure because the studs have to meet around it. Length is coverage only. The supplier's own chart also quotes a garment weight per size, which we have left out as it tells a buyer nothing useful about fit.

The press studs down the chest are the best part. One movement and the whole front opens, and there is no zip to catch her feathering. The hat is sewn on so there is nothing separate to lose, but it does sit slightly off centre unless I pull it straight after she shakes. Lovely thing otherwise and the scalloped hem looks properly finished.
I have bought full body costumes before and our staffie squats down and refuses to move in them. This one covers the chest, the shoulders and the front legs and stops there, so she can toilet and sit normally and she just carries on with her evening. The diamonds look far sharper in person than on the screen.

The published chest measurements run from 31cm at the smallest to 53cm at the largest, so I measured ours at 44cm and the large fits with room for a thin jumper underneath on a cold evening. The studs line up without stretching anything. Well worth measuring rather than guessing from a breed name.
It looks good and the studs are easy enough to use. The care note says hand wash cool because the pom poms mat, and it is not wrong. One gentle wash by hand and two of the three are noticeably less fluffy than they were. If you plan to use it for more than one season, expect it to look tired fairly quickly.
The extra small is eighty two grams, which is nothing, and our cat wandered around in it as though she was not wearing anything at all. I did not expect a jester coat to work on a cat, but with only the front legs involved it does. She looked ridiculous and I have no regrets.
The red diamonds are a fair bit darker than they look in the listing photographs, more of a wine shade than a postbox red. It still reads as a jester and I have got used to it, but it is worth knowing if you are matching it to anything. The press studs have not popped open once, even when he rolled.
Studs rather than a zip really is the difference. I lay it over his back, press down the chest and we are done, and he has never once been caught by the fastening. The hood sits well behind his ears and the hat flops forward in a way that makes everyone laugh.
Lovely costume and the harlequin pattern is sharp, but the scalloped hem is exactly the shape that picks up burrs and twigs, so I have stopped taking it on the woodland walk and keep it for the house and the front door. On the flat it is fine. The hood and hat have held up to a lot of shaking.
