Every sized garment in this range asks you to measure an animal that does not want to be measured, then commit to a chart. A scarf skips the entire problem. You fold the triangle, pass it round and tie where it sits comfortably, and the same piece of fabric serves a kitten and a springer spaniel.
The supplier quotes 20 to 46cm as the workable range, which spans nearly every cat and most dogs under about fifteen kilos. Nothing is returned because a chest measurement was two centimetres out, and nothing needs exchanging when a puppy grows.
A cat objects to restriction more than to decoration. Anything that grips the ribcage interferes with the way a cat compresses itself to get through a gap, and the response is usually to reverse, drop and shake until it comes off. A scarf grips nothing. It hangs from the neck, where the cat is already carrying a collar, and it moves with the body instead of against it.
The practical result is that a scarf tends to be forgotten within a minute, where a garment stays in the animal's attention for as long as it is on. Forgotten is the outcome you want. It is the difference between a photograph of a cat and a photograph of a cat trying to get out of something.
Tie the scarf above the existing collar rather than replacing it. The collar keeps doing its job, which on a dog in a public place means carrying a tag with a name and address on it, and the scarf sits clear of the buckle so nothing presses into the throat from two directions at once.
One thing this is not, despite the supplier filing it that way, is a drool bib. It is a thin printed polyester triangle. It washes and dries quickly, which is genuinely useful after an evening of visitors and dropped sweets, but it will not absorb anything in the way a towelling bib would.
The prints divide into two families. Witches, skeletons and pumpkins in webs are dark grounds and read as Halloween from across a room. Orange cats, purple lanterns, purple ghosts and candy corn are brighter and photograph better against a dark coat, where a black scarf tends to disappear into the fur.
If your animal is black or dark brindle, take one of the four brighter designs. If it is cream, white or golden, the dark grounds give you the contrast instead. That choice matters more to the photograph than which motif you prefer.

Anything that has to be posted over his head turns into a wrestling match, so a triangle that ties at the neck was the whole reason I bought it. He stood still for the ten seconds it took and then went back to his bed. The purple lanterns print reads clearly in photographs even indoors.
It ties on easily and our terrier does not mind it, so as a first attempt at dressing him up it worked. The fabric is extremely thin, which is presumably how it weighs so little, and it looks a bit limp once knotted. Fine for a photograph, not something I would call a proper scarf.
Our cat has refused every jumper in the house, so I went for the scarf on the basis that it sits exactly where her collar already sits. She washed her face in it within a minute and then forgot about it entirely. I chose the candy corn print and it shows up well against her black fur.
The 65cm long edge means the point hangs further down the chest than it looks in the photographs, and on a small dog it nearly reaches the front legs. Once I retied it higher that sorted itself out. The orange cats design is the one that gets comments.
The range of 20 to 46cm sounded like marketing until I tried it on both animals. Knotted short it fits the kitten, and knotted long it goes round the spaniel with room left over. There is no size chart to get wrong, which is why I ordered two more prints.
The pumpkins and webs design is properly printed and the polyester has not frayed at the edges after two washes. On a short coated dog the knot does creep loose over a couple of hours and needs redoing. Not a problem for photographs, more of one for a whole afternoon out.
We have tried a hat, a jumper and a set of wings, and all three came straight off. A knot at the throat is apparently acceptable because it feels like his collar. The witches print is dark enough that it does not look ridiculous on him in daylight.
It has been through the machine four times since August and the skeleton print has not faded or cracked. It dries on the radiator within the hour because there is so little of it. I keep it in the lead drawer and pull it out whenever we are meeting people.
I ordered the purple ghosts first and against a black coat it more or less disappears from any distance. The candy corn one I ordered afterwards is much better because of the orange and white. Same shape and same easy knot on both, so it is only the design I would think harder about.

Tie it a little further up the neck than feels natural, above the point where the neck widens into the shoulders. A scarf sitting too low rotates every time the animal shakes.
