The old advice that tug makes dogs dominant has not held up. What it does do is burn energy fast in a small space and give you something to trade for, which makes it useful on a wet day and useful in training.
Cotton strands slide between teeth as the dog works the rope, lifting some plaque. It is not a substitute for brushing and no rope is. It is simply better than a smooth rubber toy at the same job.
Every rope toy sheds strands. Undyed natural cotton means what gets swallowed is cotton, not dye. Bin it once it starts unravelling in long threads, as those are the ones that cause trouble.

Most toys sold on dental benefit do very little. Rope is the exception, and only mildly: as the dog chews, individual cotton strands pass between the teeth and wipe the surfaces in roughly the way floss does. It removes some soft plaque before it hardens, which is worth having.
What it does not do is replace brushing. Dental disease is one of the most common conditions vets treat, and it develops below the gum line where no toy reaches. Treat the rope as a small useful addition and keep the toothbrush as the main measure, rather than the other way round.
Tug has an undeserved reputation for making dogs aggressive or dominant, which is not supported by how dogs actually behave. What it does is give you something the dog wants badly, which makes it a strong reward for recall and for release commands, often stronger than food for dogs that are not especially food motivated.
The rules that make it work are simple. You start the game and you end it, the dog releases when asked, and teeth on skin ends the session immediately. A knot at each end gives you and the dog a defined grip, which keeps hands away from the middle where mouths are.
Rope is a consumable, and a dog that works at it seriously will reduce a knot to a tassel within weeks. That is the toy doing its job rather than failing. The point to retire it is when the weave has opened enough that whole strands pull free, because from then on the dog is ingesting cotton rather than flossing with it.
It washes well, which extends the useful life considerably. A machine cycle and a thorough air dry clears the saliva and grit that accumulate, and undyed cotton comes out looking much as it went in. Make sure it is fully dry before giving it back, since a damp rope left in a toy box goes musty quickly.

It does what it says on the flossing front and he works the middle of it between his back teeth rather than swallowing anything whole. Be prepared to pick cotton off the rug though, because ours has shed strands since the first week. I took the five piece set so there is a spare ready when the first one starts unravelling properly.
Our springer gets restless when the walk is cut short and a game of tug in the hallway burns more off than I expected. The knots at each end mean I can hold one while he takes the other, with my hand nowhere near his mouth. Roughly 25 cm is a sensible length for a dog his size.
Mine is a chewer rather than a tugger and he had the first one in long threads inside two weeks. The listing is upfront about binning it once it goes stringy, so no complaint there. It simply is not the toy for a dog that wants to destroy rather than pull.
Ours drags it round the garden and it comes back looking like it has been dug up. A machine wash and a day on the airer and it is fine again, which is more than I can say for the rest of his toys. Undyed cotton also means nothing runs in the wash.
At 100 g for the set they weigh almost nothing, so I can lob one across the field without it vanishing into the long grass. The one gripe is that once it is wet it stays damp for ages. It lives by the back door now rather than in the toy box.

Not indefinitely, and no cotton rope will. It is a supervised tug and fetch toy. A dog that settles down to methodically destroy it will get through it, and at that point it should go in the bin rather than back in the toy box.
