I bought the small jaw for what I thought was a medium dog and it takes two goes every time with our labrador. Entirely my fault, the description does say the small suits up to about a spaniel. The clamp itself is excellent and I stand up straight for the whole job now.
My back is the reason this is in the house. The 28cm handle means I lift from standing and drop it straight into the bag, rather than kneeling on a lawn with a thin liner over my hand. Two months of daily use in the garden and nothing has cracked.
On the path a flat scoop is fine, but on the lawn everything sits down among the blades and that is where this shines. The jaws close underneath and lift the lot rather than smearing it along. It rinses off under the outside tap in about five seconds.
There is no hinge pin, no spring and no screws, it is just moulded plastic that flexes. Which means there is nothing to seize up when it lives in the shed all winter. Ours is the avocado green and it has not gone brittle after a full year outdoors.
In the garden it is genuinely good and I have no complaint about how it picks up. Carrying a 28cm scooper round the park along with a lead and a dog is another matter, and I have gone back to bags when we are out. Useful, but it is a garden tool for us.
The thing I worried about was it dropping the load halfway to the bin, and it does not, because the jaws shut fully rather than leaving a gap. Hold it over a bag, open it, done. Simple and it works.
We went for the large jaw for our great dane and it is the right call for the size, but 440 grams on the end of a handle is far more noticeable than the small version. Fine for a quick trip out, less fun after twenty minutes of clearing. It does the job very well though.
I chose on the colour as much as anything and the cream blue is a soft pale shade that does not look like garden equipment propped by the door. More to the point, the clamp lifts cleanly off gravel as well as grass, which I was not sure about.
He cannot crouch any more and had started leaving the garden to me. With the handle he does it himself again from standing. We chose the small jaw and it suits his westie perfectly.
