What hammock mode does
A flat seat cover protects the bench and leaves the footwell open. On a hard stop, or simply on a twisty road, a dog slides forward and drops into that gap, which is uncomfortable at best and a real risk of injury at worst. It is also difficult for a dog to get out of unassisted.
Spanning the gap turns the whole back of the car into one flat surface. The dog cannot fall anywhere, and it tends to settle better because there is no edge to be aware of. The side flaps handle the other half of the problem, since door cards take a surprising amount of damage from claws and wet fur.
Waterproof, and what that means
The layer that matters is the backing rather than the surface. A quilted top absorbs some water so the dog is not lying in a puddle, while the waterproof backing stops any of it reaching the seat underneath. A cover without that backing simply moves the wet from the dog to the upholstery more slowly.
Anchoring is what makes it work day to day. Headrest straps and seat anchors keep the fabric taut, and a cover that sags becomes a bag the dog slides around in. Check the tension every few journeys, particularly after a large dog has got in and out a few times.
Fitting and cleaning
It suits most saloons, hatchbacks and estates with conventional headrests at around 137 by 147 centimetres. Measure your rear bench before ordering, since very wide vehicles leave gaps at the sides and very narrow ones bunch. Cars with fixed or integrated headrests need checking specifically, as the straps have nowhere to attach.
Cleaning is the reason to own one. Unclip it, shake it out and most of the loose hair and dried mud goes. For a deeper clean, hose it down and hang it to dry rather than machine washing, since repeated cycles degrade the waterproof backing and that is the component doing the work.

Hammock mode stopped the footwell dives
He used to end up wedged in the footwell every time I braked and now the zipped section walls it off, so he stays on the seat the whole way. The quilted side takes the wet off him after a river walk and nothing has come through to the upholstery. It straps over both headrests and has not sagged.

Anchors are fiddly the first time
Getting the seat anchors pushed down into the gap between the cushions took a good ten minutes and some swearing, though it has not needed touching since. The 137 by 147 covers our back bench with a bit spare at each side. Shakes out at the end of a walk and that is the cleaning done.

Side flaps were the surprise
Bought it for the seats and it turns out the door cards were taking as much mud as anything else. The flaps cover them properly so the whole back of the car is protected now. The waterproof backing means a soaked dog is no longer a thirty minute job at the end of a walk.

Flat bench on weekdays, hammock at weekends
Unzipping it back to the flat bench takes about five seconds, so it is flat for the school run and a hammock on Saturday. The quilting is thick enough that his claws have not marked anything underneath. It has been on and off the seats a dozen times and the straps are still tight.

Works, but it creeps on leather
On our leather bench it slides forward over a long drive even with the anchors pushed in, so I end up straightening it at the services. Everything else is fine, it is genuinely waterproof and the mud brushes off the quilting. I think it would be perfect on cloth seats.

Two muddy dogs, nothing to clean after
We walk on the moors so the car used to need a full clean every Sunday. Now the cover comes out, gets hosed and goes on the line, and the seats underneath are untouched. The hammock walls mean neither of them can get down into the footwells to shake.
