What the pheromone signals
When a cat rubs its cheek against a door frame, a table leg or your hand, it is depositing scent from glands in the face. That marking says the area is familiar and claimed, and cats do it in places they feel settled. A cat that has stopped doing it, or has started spraying urine instead, is telling you something has changed.
A diffuser releases a synthetic analogue of that facial pheromone into the room continuously. The intent is to make a space read as already marked and therefore safe, which can take the edge off the anxious behaviours that follow disruption. It is not a sedative, there is no drug involved, and the cat does not become drowsy.
Honest expectations
Evidence for pheromone products is mixed. Some studies show a modest effect on stress related behaviour and others show very little, and much of the research is small or industry funded. Individual cats respond differently, and there is no way to predict which yours will be before trying.
Give it a fortnight before judging, since the effect builds rather than appearing overnight. If nothing has changed after four weeks, it is not going to, and the money is better directed at a behaviour consultation. Used alongside genuine environmental changes it has something to work with; used alone it is being asked to do too much.

Put it in the room the cat actually spends time in, not a hallway or a spare room. Coverage is roughly one average room, so a diffuser in the kitchen does nothing for a cat that lives in the lounge. In a larger house you may need more than one, and in a multi cat home a unit in each cat's main space is more useful than one central unit.
Leave it plugged in continuously and do not put it behind furniture, under a shelf or beneath a curtain, since it works by dispersing into moving air and an obstructed unit distributes almost nothing. Keep it away from open windows and doors that are constantly open, which simply vent it outside.

Refills and running it
Each refill lasts around sixty days, and the level is visible through the bottle, so check it monthly. A diffuser left running dry is a plug warming an empty bottle, and it is easy not to notice because nothing visibly changes. Replace the plug unit roughly every six months, since the wick and heating element degrade with use.
For a planned event, start it a week or two beforehand rather than on the day. A house move, building work or a new arrival is far easier to smooth if the room already reads as settled when the disruption begins, and a diffuser switched on the morning of has had no time to establish anything.

Two indoor cats
Plugged in a week before the move
We followed the note about starting it before the change rather than after, so it went into the new flat a week ahead of the cats. Both of them came out from under the bed on day two instead of the usual fortnight. Whether that is the diffuser or luck I cannot prove, but I would do the same again.

Works, but one room only
It does say roughly one room and that is accurate, so do not expect it to cover a whole flat from the hallway socket. We ended up moving it into the lounge where the cats actually sit and it has been better since. I would have liked a slightly wider spread for an open plan downstairs.

Two refills got us through winter
The kit came with the unit and two 48ml refills, and at roughly 60 days each that covered us from November into March without buying anything else. Our younger one had been scratching the arm of the sofa and she has eased off, though we also put a post right next to it.

Fussy rescue cat
Introducing the second cat
We brought a second cat home in June and had the diffuser going for eight days beforehand as suggested. There was still hissing for the first week but far less hiding than when we tried this years ago with nothing. It does not sedate them either, which was what I cared about, they are both as daft as ever.

Senior tabby
Cannot honestly tell
I have had it running for nearly two months and I am not able to say it has changed anything here. Our cat was never a sprayer, we bought it because of building work next door, and she is still nervous when the drilling starts. No fault with the unit, it warms up and the refill has gone down as expected, it simply has not done much for us.

Quiet and warm, nothing else
I half expected a hum or an indicator light and there is neither, it just sits in the socket getting slightly warm. Six weeks in, the first refill is a little over half gone, which matches the 60 days they quote. The cat has stopped sleeping in the wardrobe, make of that what you will.
