Caps sit over the nail rather than removing anything. The cat still retracts, still stretches, still scratches. The tip is simply blunt. Nothing about this resembles declawing, which is illegal in the UK and always was the wrong answer.
They earn their place with a cat that is shredding a sofa, or one living with someone on blood thinners or with fragile skin. As an everyday default, a scratching post in the right place does more.

The distinction is worth being emphatic about. Declawing is amputation of the last bone of each toe. It is illegal in the UK and much of Europe, it causes lasting pain and behavioural problems, and it is not something any responsible source would recommend.
Nail caps do nothing surgical. They sit over the trimmed tip of a claw that remains fully intact and fully functional. The cat can still extend and retract the claw, still stretch and still perform the scratching behaviour normally. What changes is that the tip is blunt rather than sharp.
Caps treat the symptom. Scratching itself is a normal, necessary behaviour that strips the dead claw sheath, stretches the front of the body and marks territory, and a cat denied any outlet is a stressed cat regardless of what its claws can damage.
So the caps should sit alongside proper scratching provision rather than instead of it. Work out whether your cat scratches horizontally or vertically from where the existing damage is, provide the right orientation directly beside it, and use the caps to protect the furniture while that habit establishes.
Trim the claw tip first, fill the cap about a third with adhesive, extend the claw by pressing gently on the toe pad, and slide the cap on. Hold for a few seconds. Then keep the cat distracted for five minutes so it does not immediately start pulling at them while the glue is still setting.
Front claws are usually enough, which is ten caps. Twenty per bag therefore gives two full applications. They shed naturally with the outer claw sheath over roughly two to six weeks, and they come off individually rather than all at once, so check weekly and replace the ones that have gone.
Expect the first application to be the hardest. Most cats will tolerate two or three claws before losing patience, and doing one paw a day across a week is a perfectly reasonable approach that produces a far better result than wrestling through all ten in one sitting. Choose a moment when the cat is already sleepy rather than one that suits your schedule.

Size by the claw rather than by the cat. The cap should slide over the trimmed tip without force and without leaving a gap at the base. Between sizes, the smaller generally seats better.
Check the paws weekly. A cap that has been left too long can trap the growing claw, so if a set is approaching six weeks and has not shed, trim the claw and let the cap come away with it rather than leaving it in place indefinitely.
Never pull a cap off by force, since that can damage the claw underneath. If one needs removing early, trim the tip of the cap and let it loosen, or soften the adhesive first. Watch for any swelling, redness or limping and stop using them entirely if you see any of it.
